Change background color

Hi,

Not a coder or anything like that. Have Pro theme on another site. Using free version on current site. I want to change the background color of the home page only.  I thought I could make the change on the page’s Misc Options : Misc Menu, Editor, and CSS Options, but nothing (code) I am putting in works. What am I doing wrong?  Also, when I did a global change on color to get an idea of what the page color change would look like, I kept coming up with a white bar under the black menu and between the other content on the page, which is a video. Have no idea where that is coming from or how to get rid of it.
