hello,
I’ve now cloned my staging website back to my clairelight.ca domain and it looks fine…still behind a login, so that I can continue doing changes.
I’ve updated all plugins, created database backup, full backup and theme backups.
I am still running PHP 7.3.33 and from the post I read in the forum, it seems that I must update the PHP. The staging site didn’t have any PHP urgent message in the WP dashboard but the new website does…so I gather I should deal with this sooner than later.
- Is there a more preferred PHP version for the extreme Xtreme? that’s if I get a choice
2) Is this something that my hosting service normally does at my request? or something that is straight forward and that I can do through Cpanel without any experience?
3) I also am wondering if there is any known conflicts with the Jetpack plugin and Xtreme and/or with PHP 8+?

1) From my experience, Xtreme works exceeding well on PHP 8.2
2) Normally your host will need to do the PHP update for your site, as the version needs to match the server-side software too. Thus, while you may request a certain version, they will provide what works for them and what they have to hand.
3) I have no experience with Jetpack. You will need to check and see what PHP version WP and Jetpack recommend as that’s rather beyond the scope of the Forum. However, to my knowledge, there are no compatibility issues between Jetpack and Weaver Xtreme.

- Even though all my plug-ins are showing up to date and are working very well, as I review them individually I have found that some are very old and not tested for the latest WP, so I’m looking for replacements, since I really don’t need to have PHP upgrade issues more than necessary…or am I being too cautious if they are currently working?
2) I’m currently using ‘Meteor slides’ for a 4 slide header which still works perfectly though it’s been closed by WP with no more updates, which needs replacement and wondering if the Weaver show slider is a good replacement, even though it shows ‘not tested’ for the most recent WP update and there have not been updates for 2 years?

Back on page 1 of this Issue, I suggested installing WP and Xtreme on a PHP 8.x XAMPP on a desktop PC for such testing.
I don’t think there’s any other way to know what the effects of old plugins will be, than to do it that way.
Some simple imported pages and posts, some images and your Xtreeme settings, will allow you to test for basic compatibility of PHP 8.x, which your staging site cannot handle.
Regarding “Meteor Slides”, I cannot comment as I have no experience with it.
However, installing Meteor on an XAMPP site and testing your settings with a few images, ought to show if it works at all (or not) before your upgrade.
If you’re then still in doubt, you can always install Weaver Slides on XAMPP and learn what is needed in the settings to run that plugin as you require it, so you are prepared for a Meteor changeout later, if needed.

I think Jetpack has a CSS and JS optimization option. You may want to turn that off as the theme CSS and JS are already optimized, and adding further optimization usually break things.

I have delete Jetpack completely, …anything to assist in not breaking things.
I’ve been setting up Weaver slides to replace the very old and no longer supported Meteor slides…though surprisingly working very well, but again I don’t want breaks when upgrading the PHP.
I’ve got it almost identical but, seem to have lost the ‘click on the header’ function that re-directs to the Home page. I don’t see any place to do that in the slide options. Is there a CSS I can add to get that function back?

I’ve re-read your original post at the beginning of this thread regarding XAMPP. I looked into it and unfortunately it feel very overwhelming to me to start yet another steep learning curve…I also use Linux mint cinnamon as my OS.
I’ve removed some plugins including Jetpack and replaced others including Meteor slide with Weaver slider. – I’m in need of some CSS for re-activating the Header image as a click a redirect to the Home page, as it was with Meteor slides.
For the PHP upgrade, I’m planning on deactivating any plugins that are not absolutely necessary, and since I still have the staging site active, I will re-activated the plugins one by one on that staging site after the PHP upgrade…and keep my fingers crossed that all will be well.
I do appreciate your feedback and that of others that have assisted me in getting this far, but I do know my limits and they have been greatly stretched after being completely away from any WordPress stuff for actually 15 years 🙂
The header image linking to the home page is an option found in the header image option section
So I am not sure I understand what the header link to home has to do with the slider, you may want to provide a link to the page with specifics about what need to link to the home page
Go to Customizer > Header > Header Image Layout > Header Image
Click box for: Header Image Links to Site

Well, you are not using a header image but a slider, so for that to link to home, each image of the slider would have to be a link to home.
I am not sure there is a way to do that. The one thing I saw in the slider options is in the navigation section
“For Image Slide from a post, use link as specified in “Add Media” link for image rather than link to post.”
SO maybe if the slider images come from posts there is a way to have that link in each one as per the above.
I will see if I can dig up further.
@weaver, do you remember if there is a way in a weaver image slider to have each image link to a specific URL?Looking at Meteor Slides WP page, it seems it’s possible that it will stop working correctly on PHP 8+
May I humbly suggest you ask the Meteor Author what their plans are to update it, and their time schedule? The link is: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/meteor-slides/
Their page says: “This plugin has been closed as of December 31, 2024 and is not available for download. This closure is temporary, pending a full review.” So it is not a lost cause…..
Unfortunately, since it can’t be downloaded at this time, it’s impossible to test to see what will happen to the old plugin on a higher PHP. (It was asking for >6.1.1)
Then again, perhaps you could also ask the Plugin Author when happen when an old plugin site is updated to PHP 8.2.x.
Then you’ll know….. 🙂
@Scrambler Just a thought…..Since there are only four named PNGs used by Meteor Slides (or Weaver Show Sliders if the old one won’t work) is it possible to add in an <a href attribute linking these named PNGs to Home, within the Custom CSS?

Yes I’m aware of the closure for the plugin, this is the reason I was looking for a substitute, as I did for other plugins. I will write to the plugin developer when the PHP upgrade is done to find out the what’s up.
I still have the Meteor slide plugin in my installed plugins and am hoping that having this and some other plugins deactivated for the PHP upgrade will not cause any issue with the PHP upgrade. My plan is to re-activate them one by one on the staging website after the upgrade.

@user CSS can do a lot of things, and it can actually add content, but as far as I know not executable HTML.
I will try to investigate adding link to the weaver slider images, but this slider is also old and unsupported, so you may want to look at other current slider plugin which may have that functionality.
