Hello, my old website of 117 pages is still running Weaver II with no visible issues on the web pages. It is hidden behind a login page, so has not been used by the public for over 10 years. I was thinking of reviving it since it is very relevant today but when I logged in I found a Security issue that related to PHP being out of date. I did a lot of reading on PHP and still don’t know what to do about it. I also now know that Weaver II is no longer supported but also don’t know if upgrading the PHP will break my site? Compatibility issues with Themes seem to be a big point to look into also. Also don’t know if I can upgrade to Weaver Xtreme? and not break my website. So many questions for a website that still looks great but seems doomed with lack of compatibility and updates. Any ideas, other than copying out all my pages into word doc pages and starting up from scratch?
First, the best thing about WP is that changing themes does not change the content. You should not need to start from scratch.
The content of a WordPress is not overly related to the theme you use. None of your posts, pages, or widgets are changed when you change themes. However, updating to the latest PHP (which is really something that you must do) will break the old Weaver II.
But depending on which features of Weaver II you use, some are no longer available exactly in later Weaver Themes. There are equivalents, but some minor changes, and name changes.
And, there is a solution that allows you to update to Weaver Xtreme.

All of the tools are still there, the special version of Weaver II linked at the top of the above page will work on the latest PHP version. Follow the rest of the article, including the link to the Weaver II to Weaver Xtreme converter plugin, and ignore the warnings that it hasn’t been updated in a long time – it still works.

I’m finally finding the time to convert my website.
I have PHP on 7, I have disabled the automatic WordPress updates (now on 6.6.2) and disabled auto plugin updates, I’ve clones my website and working my way through the preparation part 1.
Unfortunately the Short code compatibility plugin is not available.
Is there anyway for me to get that plug-in, it seems rather essential for the conversion?
I’ve installed all the other plugins and theme you mention in part 1 but haven’t activated them.
Waiting to hear back from you on the short code compatibility plugin.

If you do not have dozens of shortcodes, you can simply edit the old shortcodes and change their syntax of the one of the new shortcodes.
It is the best and fastest way to implement that change.
Can you confirm that here is no longer a plugin? No link anywhere in the background or download possible?
I don’t remember actually what a short code is or how many I have, since I’ve been away from WordPress for over 10 years.
It’s quite a steep re-learning curve after all this time and I’m winging it, trying to save this rather large and very customized website before it crashes.
There is one Weaver plugin you need: “Weaver Xtreme Theme Support”
There is also an old conversion plugin which may be referred to in the earlier upgrade documentation link: “Weaver II to Weaver Xtreme”
It’s a long time since I did a Weaver II to Xtreme conversion, but as I recall, it’s better to have some screen captures of the original menus, as I had troubles with them. Easy to re-do from the screen captures tho.
Finally, you may want to perhaps consider setting up a temporary staging site on your PC, and installing an XAMPP WP version there. That way you can import the old site (or part of it) and see any issues before making changes to the live site.
Personally, I found the change in font sizes between the two something which I need education on and to pay attention to, as they use different sizing criteria, and it took a while to get to back to what I was familiar with. Not difficult, but just took time to pedantically fine tune. 🙂
It’s all a bit of a learning curve I know…. but a staging or XAMPP PC version will really help build confidence and test things.
Finally, regarding the PHP versions available, personally, I’d go for the most updated version you can get, as I have found that 8.2+ is a whole lot faster and more forgiving than the previous ones (7+). Certainly many, many fewer error messages now than before, as XAMPP will show. Just as thought…..

If you do not remember what a shortcode is, you can look in the Add Ons tab of the weaver Admin pages.
In weaver II you will see what they can be used to, and in Xtreme you will see the new version and syntax
Ultimately when doing the upgrade, if one is being used that is no longer working, you will see the error or effect in the site, then you can go and edit the old shortcode.
You had to basically add them yourself manually inside your content to achieve some function, so it is very possible you did not use any of them if you don’t recall.

I have already created a staging test site.
I have a lot of specific menus for different sections of my website, 14 in all, I guess that might be a bit of a challenge, but I will be able to look back on the original site to view what it looked like…I’ve taken a lot of screen shots as well.
I figured it might be a lengthy process with a lot of fiddling to get it back to it’s original state…I plan on doing a bit every day so that this senior does not get overwhelmed with it all…there certainly have been a lot of changes in WordPress itself!

There’s a lot I don’t recall in the details of the inner workings of WordPress or Weaver 🙂 it has been 10 years or more since I created the website 🙂

I’m actually doing fairly well with my conversion to Weaver Extreme.
A few glitches that are probably an easy fix but I’m just not finding where to do it.
I have the sidebars Primary and Secondary stacked to the right of the content.
The primary sidebar is at the right place below the header, but the content section is below it to the left rather than beside it, and then the Secondary sidebar is in line with the Primary sidebar on the right but instead of being below the Primary sidebar, it is below the content section. A zig zag effect.
Unfortunately I have the website behind a password login so don’t have a URL to show…hoping that my description will be enough….I did take screen shots but don’t see a place to inset images here.
It just seems like there needs to be a bit more space between the content section and the sidebars so that they can slip next to each other.
Padding issue or something of the like or something else…any leads to correct this would be very helpful!

On your desktop page, go the the top and make sure you have the Xtreme Admin options checked.
Then go down to the bottom of the page and in the Extreme options, select the template layout you want.

Rather than come here to delete the password data, may I humbly suggest you make a new temporary admin password for our use, which you may then delete in a couple of days at your convenience.
