Two Weaver II websites need upgrade to Weaver Xtreme

I built both websites in 2010 with Weaver II: https://toshmcintosh.com and https://novelinprogressaustin.com. They currently are stable because the php issue is being dealt with by CloudLinux Hosting.

The novelinprogress site serves a writers’ critique group, and members are interested in updating the site to include features unavailable with the older theme. I have migrated the toshmcintosh site to WordPress.com and am using it as a test to try a modern theme, but the block format is difficult to use, and I would much prefer using Weaver Xtreme.

My question is whether the last step to install the plugin as described in the Weaver-II-Limited instructions, and which no longer works, is necessary to install Weaver Xtreme.

I am also curious about whether the CloudLinux hosting with Go Daddy will interfere with upgrading.

That said, you can also just install and activate Xtreme and redo a fresh customization of the site based on the current needs.

If you want to take your time without disturbing the live site, you can create a staging site in a subfolder, work the details there, then transfer to the live site.

I don’t know anything about cloudlinux. All I do know is that if you are still using Weaver II, your site will not be secure. I don’t know any specific issue, but I’m not even sure if Weaver II will work with the latest version of WordPress anymore. I know that the conversion version of Weaver II has been modified to run just well enough to use the converter plugin.

Your old sites may seem to work, but that may not last.

So if the converter doesn’t work, then the best thing might be just to switch to Weaver Xtreme. The site should still mostly work unless there are embedded short codes or other Weaver II features. The Weaver II to Weaver Xtreme helps with most of that.

But we can only provide very limited support for the conversion.

After a quick look at your sites, it does seem that you have not used many advanced features of Weaver II. I think the most difficulty you might have is to bring over the menus. WordPress associates each menu with a specific theme.

A short answer from Claude AI suggests this method for getting your menus back:

2. Navigate to Appearance → Menus

Update from the OP: I have managed to get both of my sites switched to the latest version of WordPress and update to php 7.4, and the formatting hasn’t changed.

Now I am going to follow your procedures to convert from Weaver II to Weaver Xtreme. The last time I tried that and failed, I think the CloudLinux Hosting locked the outdated php in place and prevented the step at which I got the failure message from occurring.

I hope I can soon join the ranks of satisfied Weaver Xtreme users!!

Thank you for your help. I have managed to transfer toshmcintosh.com to WordPress and install Weaver Xtreme. I still need to do that with novelinprogress, but the upgrade didn’t work exactly like the process was described, and I need to know how to use the weaver-II-backup-settings.w2b to recover my site as previously published so I can refer to my appearance and colors and rebuild the site close to the way it was before.

I also would like to avoid being in the same situation with novelinprogress, which I think requires cloning the site prior to changing it. How do I do that?

My menus were really messed up, but the Claude AI method worked like a champ!!

Menus do not automatically transfer. Backup settings files are not compatible as far as I know. Unfortunately, this is likely to require manual changes.
