I’m having trouble understanding the search template. I have pages and posts on a test site and when I perform a search I sometimes get a different template than at other times. I think what happens is the template is decided on with regard to the top entry on a given page.
Here’s an example. My search form is at http://www.ambwebdesign.co.uk/wordpress/search/
If I type in Dursley into the search, you’ll find two pages in the results. The first page looks like my blog pages because the results match posts. When you go to the second page of results, you’ll notice a different sidebar because this is picking up a page which has that sidebar in it. Further tests also display slightly different amounts of space above the title links of the search results.
I’m actually wanting search results to have no sidebar at all and be consistent in their spacing. I don’t know if this is a theme or WordPress issue. I see there’s a search.php file which includes the following. I’m using a child theme but I don’t understand what this is meaning but perhaps my answer lies in here somewhere.

I understand that there are more features when you pay but it seems strange to have such anomolies for those who have the free version. I think, at the very least, the template should be uniform for every search query instead of throwing up different layouts according to the results.
Is there a quick guide on how to amend the search page for a child theme so I can have no sidebars (and keep them on my usual blog pages) and also just have one template appear whatever the search result produces?
Well, if the option is important to you, then perhaps it would be worth your time to pay for the Plus plugin instead of spinning your wheels trying to write custom PHP code.
Many of the Plus options were put there for those who needed a specific feature (like setting the sidebar layout of search pages.)
In fact, those options are 100% consistent for Plus users. They use reasonable defaults for the free version.
The only way this theme will continue to be supported is by sales of the Plus version.
When a feature is supported by Plus, it is our general policy not to provide extra support so users can avoid getting the Plus plugin. That is a bit counter productive, I hope you can understand.
But like many other themes, IF you know your CSS and PHP and how child themes work, one can certainly read the theme source code and figure out how to make a child do exactly what you need. Your are welcome to follow that path – the structure for building a totally custom search result page is certainly there. But seriously, if Plus provides support for what you need, you aren’t paying yourself very well to spend all that time on custom code.
But providing free help to add features provided by Plus in a child theme is like stealing money from ourselves. Not really the best idea.
I take your point ‘weaver’. It’s fair enough and I hope I didn’t offend. If Plus was a one-off payment you’d have my money like a shot. However, if I cannot afford the renewal any time in the future (and I see there’s a discount) then I have the following worries.
1) Would I lose the existing Plus features if I didn’t renew or would I just not be entitled to any further upgrades?
2) If I couldn’t keep my theme up-to-date, might I be in a situation where I could potentially be opening myself up to security vulnerabilities?
3) Lastly, as WordPress evolves, could I be in a situation where I cannot upgrade WordPress if I can’t update my theme (again introducing possible security vulnerabilities)?These are genuine questions as I don’t know the answers. What I’m afraid of doing is starting down a road that I may regret in the future.
I would only require one licence as I no longer do web design work as techniques have changed over the years and it doesn’t pay enough to keep going. This WordPress site will eventually be for my own personal site although I’m trying it out on a test site at present.
I really do appreciate the work and time that goes into the theme but I’m paranoid about being hacked. I have Updraft backup on my site but I’d prefer to avoid any unnecessary security risks if at all possible. Perhaps my fears are unfounded. I honestly don’t know enough about how this all works.
1) you do not loose anything if you don’t renew, the plugin will continue to function normally, you just will not get the new updates.
2) and 3) @weaver would be best answering these.
Historically, Weaver is one of the longer lived themes in the WP repository, and it is highly likely that it will continue to be kept up to date with the latest versions of WP, and with security updates for a long time to come.
There are many themes that have not been updated in years that many people still use – WordPress generally maintains excellent backward compatibility. In the many years we’ve been producing Weaver Themes, there has only been one time WordPress really “broke” old themes (and presumably, some of those old themes are still broken for this one thing), and that was the Page/Post editor. It still works, but some themes supported special editor formatting to match the theme, and that quit working with 4.0, I think.
The X-Plus plugin relies heavily on the core functionality of the theme, and doesn’t have much in the way of items that present possible security issues.
And one of the main points of WordPress is that your content will always remain there. You can ALWAYS switch themes. With a theme, you might lose some design capability, but your content will be there, and in the very worst case, it is possible to create custom modification for almost any theme to do what you really need to do. Of course, the point of Weaver Xtreme is to let you do all that with checkboxes!
Thank you both for your replies. I will give it some thought. Just one last question. If I purchased Plus and used it on my test site, could I transfer the licence to my live site when I’m ready and roll back the test site’s theme to non-Plus?
Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if I could test it out on the test site first and then use the licence on the live site later and drop it from the test site. The two sites are not on the same domain.
I believe you can deactivate the licence on one site and then activate it on another site, but it would be best to wait for @weaver to confirm.
Please bear in mind that the main purpose of the license is for automatic updating of the plugin.
The plugin has been stable for some months now, but an update is likely fairly soon after the V2 of the free version is released. There are a couple of fixes. But nothing in the current version will fail.
So, you really don’t need to worry much about the activations over a short time frame.
