Page parents to one page but not another

I have a very strange issue that I’ve never encounter before. I’ve just created two pages and am trying to parent one with the other. Every time I do so, the “offspring” reverts to the home page frontend and I don’t know what’s causing it. If I parent it to another established page, it works fine. Here’s the page I’m trying to parent to.

Here’s the page the page should be parented to:

And here’s what happens when the first page (which I’ve called “test”) is parented to the second:

I must point out that all pages use the default template and no custom code has been used on either. I’m stumped as to how to ever start looking for a solution …

Never mind. I believe I’ve work it out. My permalink settings weren’t setup properly.
