I did this a few years ago, but now I’m lost. I have latest ver 5 Xtremee theme at this URL: https://davidkirk.org/sandbox/  I have one widget in footer, but do not see how to add a second or a third. Would you please point me in the right direction for this? I will so appreciate it. Thank you.

widgets are added in the respective widget area found in Appearance > Widgets.

You can then change the layout in the theme options for that area, like using multiple columns.

Thanks. I set columns to 3 in Sidebar Layout, but in Appearance>Widgets>Footer widget area, I can find no way to distinguish the columns. Whenver I add a widget, it appears below the original.

This reply has been accepted as the best answer.

Why would you expect the sidebar layout to affect the footer widget area layout?

For the number of footer widget area column, either go to the legacy admin > main options > Footer > Footer widget area for the column option

Or the customizer in Where mode > Footer > Footer widget area

I think I just discovered the approach. I selected Footer Widgets from Customize and the areas became visible. My regrets for your time. Thank you. Your comment did send me in the right direction.
