Multiple Loops Using Show Posts Filters & Resource Usage / Performance Impact

Hi guys,

One of our site is a news site, and it requirement was to have a layout like this: http://themes.momizat.com/goodnews/

We made that layout creating Show Posts filters like (for latest news):
[show_posts filter=”latest_news_1_post_excerpt”]
[show_posts filter=”latest_news_3_posts_titles_left_col”]
[show_posts filter=”latest_news_3_posts_titles_right_col”]

There are 7 categories to show on home page, and 7×3 = 21 loops?

Google Analytics says we have about 1500 daily sessions and 3000 page views.

Can that be the cause of high resource usage on our shared hosting? We are using double the resource limit on our shared hosting and we’ve tried many things to control it. But no luck.

How big a part our use of Show Posts Filter may be playing in this?

Note that 21 loops would correspond to 21 mySQL queries, but then each post displayed would also generate at least one query, and likely many more (1 for each image in the media library, for example). So that 21 extra queries is not likely to add that much overhead.

But if you are really getting 3000 page views a day, then it is not surprising you might be putting a load on a shared server. I’ve always said that 1000 to 2000 page views per day was pushing the limits of a shared server. At the very least, you should try a cache (e.g., the one with WordFence, or Zen Cache, among others), and CloudFlare. The combination would greatly reduce the load on a shared server.

Super Cache should be fine, but I’ve come to prefer the WordFence cache since I think it is really a requirement to run with some kind of security plugin, and WordFence is pretty good, and “throws in” a very nice cache tool as a side benefit.
