Left sidebar won’t expand

Just a few days ago my left sidebar in my edit mode had closed and is only showing icons. When I click the ‘expand’ arrow at the bottom, it changes colour, but the sidebar doesn’t expand. Everything else seems to be okay, but I prefer to have the text rather than icons.

I’m not sure if this a Weaver issue or a WordPress one.

I’ve tried all the usual: restart Safari, restart computer, etc., but no joy. I’m using an Intel iMac with Mac OS 13.7.1 (hoping for a new one for Christmas! 🙂

It will probably be something I’ve done (or not aware of), but I was hoping someone might have a fix for me.

Are you talking about the WordPress backend?

Have you tried different browser and different computers?

You may have a cache issue in your browser.

But this is a wordpress issue so you should search WordPress.org

Getting the left side column in WP Dashboard or the editor is controlled by the last item in the menu – a circle with a left or right arrow. Clicking that will shrink or expand the menu column.

Yes, I know that … it actually lights up when I hover over it, but nothing happens when I click it..

Yes, my “edit” mode. I have tried a different browser (Chrome), but same result.

I don’t have access to a different computer.

Been working for years … but just stopped opening up about two weeks ago. Everything else is working (adding pages, changing content, uploading images, adding footnotes … just the sidebar not able to open (all icons show content when hovering mouse.) :-/

try redoing the last wordpress update in case something became corrupted.

Deactivate all plugins, and see it it changes anything, and if it does, reactivate one by one

I’d suggest you install the “Health Check & Troubleshooting” plugin and run a test with no plugins or theme loaded.

That will confirm if it is a WP Core issue or not.

It may also reveal if it’s a plugin or theme issue, as you can test each independently.

One more thing – does this happen only for the editor, or both the editor and the dashboard? If it just the editor, then is it just in classic edit mode, or customizer as well? Does switching to a different theme change this? But this is almost certainly not related to Weaver.

 

Try asking on WP forums – explain your issue, but do specify that when you try to click the expand > or shrink < arrow buttons that they highlight, but don’t do anything, and you are stuck in shrink mode. Note in your post that you are running the latest WP update, and you’ve tried more than one browser.

Hi Weaver,

Yes, the issue is the same in Dashboard and Edit mode. I haven’t tried using a different ‘theme’ as yet.

I have posted on the WP Forum as well, and I’ll see if someone there has a suggestion before starting the process of turning off plug-ins.
