How to stop auto telephone format detection.

Occasionally some text on my WP website (using Weaver Xtreme) is converted to a telephone format (e.g. it makes 1866 ENGLAND into a telephone link). My site doesn’t require this feature, and I’d like to find a way to stop it auto detecting. I don’t have any plug-ins that would enable that, so can it be disabled somewhere in the dashboard?

For clarification, does this show up on both phone and desktop browsers?

Is it happening on both site comments and WP content?

Update:  I don’t believe Weaver Xtreme has such functionality.  However, research reveals that it seems some analytic plugins do this for their internal reporting.

If this issue is in any way predictable/ repeatable, can you check that your plugins are not the cause of this?

It shows on both desktop and device browsers. I have never seen it in a comment as yet, but just in WP content.
I’ve only seen it a few times, and I have a workaround (I fill the text space with a symbol, and colour that the same as the background – not elegant, but works for now).
I can’t see how it is any of my plug-ins – never seen a setting that has anything to do with auto identifying phone numbers or the like.

Usually it’s just a string of numbers that gets ‘linked’, which can sometimes be written out as text to avoid, but this latest one – 1866 ENGLAND – is a bit more worrying. I have a lot of that kind of text (it’s a family history site, and I have birth death, marriage and census records with that kind of heading).

From your reply, I understand that this is a new intermittent error.

Interestingly, I have found a few similar oddities to this in the last 2 updates of WP Core that took the plugin authors up to 5 days to fix

I checked your site at search for “1866 England” but could not find it, so wasn’t able to do much more  But then again you’ll have fixed it by now…… 🙂

1)  The next time you get that Date Stamp showing, please do take a screen capture and then right-click on INSPECT after highlighting the Date.   That ought to show you what precicely is being displaying and where any errant code originates.

It gives quite a few way of adding Date/Time Stamps into WP.

After looking at their various code offerings, you may like to check your WP-Config.php file and the Xtreme CSS customisation setting for any similar wordings. Just in case a plugin has added such code to your site automatically on activation.

3)  As another alternativbe method of fixing this issue on a case by case basis, perhaps using a Word Break in the middle of the “1880 England” will work.  Something like  “1880 England” ought to stop the phrase being recognised by whatever is causing the issue.

Hi All,

Many thanks for your responses – I’ve been away for a few days, so I’m just catching up on my messages.

Yes, I have done a ‘fix’ with a space break for my current error, but I’ll go through these ideas and report back if I find the cause.  Funny thing is it doesn’t happen on very similar word/letter strings on the same page, so that’s a mystery in itself (or a clue?).  Hmm.
