Is there an efficient way to have one header image (hero image in this case) for the front page and a different one for all other pages? I see that individual page header images can be changed by setting the FI as header, but 1) that requires changing settings for every single page and remembering to do that for all new pages, and 2) prevents the use of an individual FI for any pages.
Also, there’s an option to hide the header image on the front page, so the all-other-pages header image could be selected with that option, but then would it be possible to set up the front (posts) page with the hero image?

ModeratorIf the front page is the only one different, then the easiest would be to have the theme header image set for all pages, and then use the feature image header image replacement JUST for the front page.
If for some reason you dont like that and you have the Plus plugin, you can hide the header image on the front page, and set a different one using Plus Header Image replacement HTML box

ParticipantThanks! This works well as far as it goes, but it also means that I cannot use featured images on ANY other pages without having them display as the header, correct?

No, the featured image being used as the header image is a per Page setting.
If you activate it on the Home page, it only applies there
