    Hello,

    I need to create two columns on pages and within one of those columns I need to place images and text into columns  (Please see LASartor.com front page for an example).  I need my book series in the right column of that page to be in a horizontal column and the main page to have two columns as shown. The only way I could create this as it is now, is to use the Page Builder plugin.  It’s not perfect and as you can see, my books are a vertical column within the primary two columns on the page. I was able to make it work once horizontally for the books, but can’t replicate what I did.

    Additionally on my “bookshelf” landing page, I had to create a “gallery effect” to get them horizontal and clickable. As I’m adding new books fairly frequently I need to finally figure this problem out. I’ve tried searching the web for answers, and unfortunately, the best suggestion I found was to do the “gallery effect” which isn’t what I want.

    Thanks, Leslie Ann

    This reply has been accepted as the best answer.

    Since your have Weaver X Plus (per your post title) you can easily add columns just about anywhere with the Flex Column widget.

    I also use Weaver link buttons (another Weaver X Plus feature) when I have to add images in a horizontal row, and you can easily shift, add, or remove buttons.

    Yup an update to a plugin gave me the error, it’s restoring now.  As an aside to the column issue, I need to make sure I understand Weaver’s backup.  Is there a thread about it?  I’ll let you all know when the site is live again.

    Hi Maureen, I’ll go in and check this out once the site has been restored.  I’m so leary of plugins and apparently rightfully so.

    Thanks for the links, Scrambler.  I’ve printed off the pages so I can study them while I’m waiting for the restore.  Maureen mentioned link buttons?  Where can I find info on those.  I’d like to get rid of my plugins and just use the power of the theme to do this layout.

    Okay, so if I want to create columns in main page area, I use arbitrary and assign it to that page? Yes, I don’t know what I’m doing. I just don’t want it to be on sidebar, but the main content.

    No idea what you mean by “use arbitrary”

    The first thing is to clarify the column structure you are after, so we can determine the easiest way to do it.

    For simple 2 or 3 columns, the HTML explained in the first article I referenced placed in the content editor or the page will do.

    For a more complex structure that would require using the Flex columns Widget, you design the structure using the widget options, then you insert that widget into your page by using the Widget Shortcode plugin as explained in the article.

    Okay, bit by bit I’m understanding this.

    What if I want to add an image in a text box?

    Where do I find my sitewide CCS so at least I can style the boxes for this until I understand more about creating custom CCS for these boxes.

    I’ll keep reading and trying on a test page.

    Thank you for any additional help you all can offer.

    It’s pretty nifty.

    “Arbitrary” is the widget setting for adding to a page.

    Basically I want two columns on the main page. They will both have text and images that will link other pages.

    The left column is simple, but the right column will also have horizontal rows that will have images of the books whick are clickable.  Each row will be a separate “book series” that I’ve written.  Currently, I have the main page in two columns using the site builder plugin, but it will not allow me much flexibility with the left column as the books are vertical instead of horizontal rows within in the column, so it’s harder, especially on mobile to see an entire series by their covers.

    I suspect there will be an unlimited number of books.

    To get rows of books composed of an image on the left and text on the right, all you need is HTML that looks like below

    <a class=”myimage”><img src=”Image1Url”/></a> <div class=”mytext”>The text for the book1</div>
    <a class=”myimage”><img src=”Image2Url”/></a> <div class=”mytext”>The text for the book2</div>
    <a class=”myimage”><img src=”Image3Url”/></a> <div class=”mytext”>The text for the book3</div>

    And add the CSS below in the theme Custom CSS Rule box for the styling. We can add more styling as necessary, like setting a width percentage for each part …

    .myimage {float:left;clear:both;}
    .mytext {float:left;}

    And so you can use a flex column widget with two text boxes, one for the left column, and one for the right, and put the HTML above in the right text box
