I too had similar issues when first setting up a Child Theme, so I used a plugin which did it for me.
I then deleted the plugin as it was no longer needed.
It was all so long ago now, I have no idea of which one I used, but there are a few to choose from.
That said, it is best to have your database backed ready before you start, so you can quickly undo it if needed.
Or you can do as I now do, and set it all up on my desktop pc using XAMPP, and then simply copy the final working version over to the server.
