Can’t adjust site width

I think it’s working, so it must have been the php version.

I looked at your test site, and everything seems to look right to me except the content area needed right padding to have some space to the right of the widget area.

I’m no sure what width you were trying to set for the header area. It was set to center, but worked as expected for other widths.

FYI: I changed (temporarily!) my local development site to PHP 7.2, and now it won’t save the settings and gets the same max_input_vars error when I try to save from the legacy admin interface.

Interesting. I might try to see if I can find the real issue, or possibly raise the required version of PHP.
