Bad CLS Score: Header image shift on page load

Hi,

my CLS score has been terrible and I’ve been told it’s caused by ‘header image shift on page load’. Is there an easy way to fix this?

I’m using Ezoic Leap to optimize everything and I don’t have any lazy loading plugins or other caching plugins etc. I’m including a screenshot of my settings in Ezoic.

Your scores that I get are:

webpagetest.org have some “experimental advice” for you look at.

They seem to show it is okay….

I see no loading time issue either.

But be careful if you are using a plugin that optimizes CSS and JS. The theme CSS and JS are already optimized, and reoptimizing them can break the theme in unpredictable ways.

If your plugin optimizes JS and CSS I would exclude all theme files from the optimization.

Thank you for your replies. Are you saying the core web vitals are fine? How can I exclude the theme files? I’ve got these options in Leap:

Your site seems to load very fast. The only delay I see is loading the advertising strip at the bottom.

I can’t see any reload problem with the header image shift happening., but looking at your site’s html output, I really couldn’t say what all is going on.

There seems to be a lot of added scripts and other code. There are additional classes added to the header image that are not done by the theme.

And I can’t see what might be causing any diagnostic that gives you a bad score on someone’s test. In my experience, it is advertising and content from other sites that tend to give performance hits.

But there is not anything I can think of that could be changed as part of the theme that might help you site at all.

Check the advanced settings of your optimize plugin and see if you can exclude certain files, like all files under a certain directory (the theme directory). If you cant find the option contact the developper

Have you tried to run your CLS Test Site with “Ezoic Leap” and all other optimization plugins off, and a clean cache?

If so, how did it go?

That is the site I suggest you go back to, and use it to test you own site again, with “Ezoic Leap” and all other optimization plugins off, and a clean cache.

Personally I use and prefer GTMETRIX (above).  That said I find all seem to give slightly different results.  The results also seem to change a little depending on the time of day….  🙂   i.e. better results on a quiet connection  🙂
