1) I did have the menu created in the custom wordpress menu and that is what I was using, so that part should be fine
2) I went ahead and went to settings > reading and selected blog as my home page (leaving custom menu unchanged)
3) I created a new page named Test, selected the page with posts template and added it to the custom menu.
What I see is that on the front (blog) page, the categories/tags show in the “blog top widget area”
On the test page, the “blog top widget area” does not display.
(I also hid the page title so I could see this more clearly and the blog top widget area didn’t display.)
I would definitely be curious to understand why it isn’t displaying. I may decide to not have it display anyway, but would like to have the choice just in case.
I also now have a second problem, which you can’t see as things are. So I will post on that once we’re done with this.
