I’ll just let you know that I found another solution. I will save the featured images with the appropriate width (and compressed), add them to WordPress,  load them full size, center aligned in the customizer (post specifics, FI, single page) and then enlarge them with a certain percentage  (on desktop only – using CSS rules) to achieve the desired width. That seems to work.
